Is There Silver In Your Smile?

Remember years ago, when you'd visit your dentist and find out that you had a cavity even though you couldn't see it. You would schedule an appointment to have it filled and return in a week or so.

On your return visit the doctor would fill your tooth and prevent the future problems that could arise from a growing cavity. Upon looking in a mirror however you'd noticed that there was an awful looking silver filling. You almost wished it was still the cavity that you couldn't see.

While amalgam fillings are unattractive to begin with, over time, the material which makes up the filling corrodes and leaks blackening the silver and many times the tooth. Metallic fillings have also been a source of controversy as they contain mercury. Mercury is an environmental contaminant and has been linked to many health conditions.

If you are concerned about the presence of mercury in your mouth, embarrassed by old fillings or simply curious about your options, talk to us about Composite fillings.

We are equipped to safely remove and dispose of amalgam fillings. Due to the nature of mercury, special precautions are taken at every step of this procedure.

Composite fillings that will be used to replace the amalgam fillings are made of a material that actually bonds to the tooth for a tight seal. They are strong, stain-resistant, and colour-matched to the natural tooth, making them essentially 'invisible'. Composite fillings also lack the sensitivity that is often associated with silver fillings.

During your next visit feel free to ask us about the benefits of replacing silver fillings with virtually 'invisible' composite fillings, your smile will thank you.
